Andrea Nicolaj

HEAD OF THE ECONOMY AND TRADE SECTOR OF THE DELEGATION OF THE EUROPEAN UNION IN URUGUAY

Andrea has worked in European foreign affairs for more than 20 years and, since 2014, he is Head of the Economy and Trade Sector of the European Union Delegation in Uruguay. Andrea earned a Degree in Political Science from the University of Rome and a Master of Arts in International Relations from the Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS), Johns Hopkins University, Washington D.C. Prior to joining the European Commission, he worked as a World Bank researcher in Washington D.C. and as a private consultant.

As an official of the European Commission, he held the position of Economic Counselor of the European Commission Delegation in Romania (1994-1998) and in Senegal (1998-2002). He worked in the European Commission Unit in charge of negotiations for the Doha Development Round of the World Trade Organization on trade and development issues (2002-2006). He was in charge of relations with Sri Lanka and India in the European Commission’s Directorate of Foreign Affairs (2006-2010) and served as First Counselor at the European Union Delegation in Canberra, Australia (2010-2014).
